- >Now that we know the GUS cannot sustain 44.1KHz sampling in 32-voice wavetable:

-
- Here are two reasons:
-
- 1. When recording any sound source, the better the resolution you have
- (i.e., the higher the sampling rate), the better the recording
- results. Also, you won't always be recording from the GUS. I plan
- on recording external audio input, and therefore a 48KHz sampling
- rate is very desirable.
-
- 2. The sampling rate is *UP TO 48KHZ*. If you want to record at
- 44.1KHz, then go ahead! Just change the sampling rate to 44.1KHz.
- But having the OPTION of recording up to 48KHz gives you the
- ability to make some high quality sound samples.

- Hi,
-
- I also bought the new set of mission disks. I had to restore the original
- comanche.exe and apply the mission disks. Than i also tried the patch
- but it (as you said) checks the source.
-
- Than I tried comanche with the mission disks and without the patch and
- everything works fine. You don't need the patch for the new mission
- disks anymore. Obviously the GUS patch is build in or whatever. I have
- digital sound (speaking) like before.

- [Some people recently started a discussion about Cubase/Win and the GUS]
-
- Another thing i have noticed about Cubase is that you have (should!)
- start windows in standard mode. This does not work with the ultrasound
- drivers, as they only will work in enhanced mode.
- The problem is that Cubase does not work smoothly in enhanced mode, at
- least not on my 386/40. It needs standard mode (or more processing
- power) to hold the tempo constantly. Playing midi files can give a very
- funny sound! Other sequencers (or demos of them) that i have do not show
- this.
- Has anybody gotten around this ?

-
- I have essentially the same hardware setup as John - i.e. GUS and
- Adaptec 1542B - and I also experienced the same problem. Windows did
- work well enough for me with the new GUS installation disks to be
- able to reconfigure the drivers correctly with the menu sequence
- ControlPanel->Drivers->Gus->Setup. The net effect, however, is the
- same as John's more direcrt edit of SYSTEM.INI.
-
- Also, another Adaptec+GUS note: GUSMOD as it is shipped on the
- the 2.06 disks seems to still suffer from the problem described
- in volume 3, issue 18 of the GUS digest, wherein Wayne Hodgen writes:
-
- | Date: Fri, 16 Apr 93 14:58:42 MET DST
- | From: hodgen@informatik.uni-koblenz.de
- | Subject: Adaptec and GUS
- |
- | I finally got it working. Gusmod doesn't hang any more. I can save the setup
- | as often as I want. It even works from the CD-ROM no problem. Ultramod works
- | with the CD-ROM drivers in and Starcon2 as well. It all boils down to the
- | programmers scanning for the interrupt and DMA lines. Maybe there's some
- | reason why they can't just use the ULTRASND variable but ... The answer is
- | to set the interrupt and DMA for the ultrasound and the adaptec so that these
- | programms find the ultrasound first. My setup now is
- | Ultrasound: B/a 210, DMA 5, IRQ 11 and 12
- | Soundblaster: B/a 220, DMA 1, IRQ5
- | Adaptec: B/a 300, DMA 7, IRQ 15
-
- I cannot vouch for the recommended configuration, as I chose simply to
- live without GUSMOD until it co-exists more gracefully with the Adaptec.
- BTW, I did configure GUSMOD correctly using the supplied GUSMOD
- configuration program, which also left me wondering why the authors
- did not use the standard environment variable.

- I sent a note asking John Smith at GRAVIS if the new Miles drivers would be
- released on archive sites. The answer I received was: "They can be found at"
- and then he pasted the complete BBS nodes list. I looked at EPAS for any new
- file and the last one was GUS0031 (SBOS 2.08). Either the .ADV files I am
- looking for are included with the new disk set, or the EPAS archive is not up
- to date. Could a kind soul please check at the GRAVIS BBS for any new file and
- put them in the SUBMIT directory of EPAS.

- First, a little warning/comment about the files in epas. Last time
- I looked, there wasn't a file called "newpatch.zip" although there's
- a text file called "newpatch.txt" It seems the 2 new patches in the
- new disk set were ULed unzipped. (*.pat files). Anyway, what patch
- does charang.pat replace?
-
-
- There is a file called patch.zip which is the patch editor from the
- SDK. Anyway, if you try to load an older patch file (usually one of
- the custom ones), it says "old version, Use update to update the
- file". Where's update? (It's not in the SDK anywhere, either).

- .To all of those who have been wishing for this to come back
- (and those of you who couldn't care less as well :)...
-
- .The digest(s) are again being uploaded to archive.epas every
- night. Fweee.
-
- .The Ultrasound Daily Digest goes into the directory
- /pub/pc/ultrasound/digest, the GUS Programmer's Digest goes into
- /pub/pc/ultrasound/sdk-digest. The 'daily' file will be updated daily
- (oddly enough) with the latest digest, and back issues will be stored
- in the directory vol-X/Y, where X is the volume number and Y is the
- issue number.
-
- .Also, for those who keep track of such things, I am going to
- change the system so that the volume number increments every month,
- instead of every quarter.
-
- .Finally, the GUS FAQ is posted to the relevant USENET
- newsgroups on the 5th and 20th of every month.
-
- .I'll upload the missing digests to archive.epas as soon as I
- get a free moment.

- Hi folks!
-
- Please be careful with the midifile pianoman from the archive midis.zip.
- When trying to play it with playmidi V4.03, i got the following error:
-
- Expecting MTrk, correct midi file ?
-
- Then my system hang up. After rebooting, i got (and still get) a
- xcoms checksum failure...:-(
- This seems to be a bug (definitly not a feature ;-) ) of playmidi
- which can't handle the error.
- Ciao...Olli
